Cheap Thrills

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you're all ready for a fun and relaxing weekend! No stress, no work, and all fun ... to me that's what weekends are about!

And to start my weekend off right I headed to the Dollar Tree to see if I could score anything good. In order to keep my budget under control while still feeding my shopping/decorating compulsion, the Dollar Tree is one of my faves!

Now I know a lot/most of the stuff in there is pretty tacky, cheap and not too cute. But sometimes you really do find the best deals! Especially on craft and floral stuff. Here's what I came home with today...

These white taper candles are 2/$1 so I bought 14 to place all together in my French wire urn (the way Holly does).

I've been looking everywhere for little tin pails like these (in galvanized or white). Who knew to look at the Dollar Tree! I had wanted to paint a number on them, but now I kind of like the simple white look. Although heck, for a dollar I guess I could buy a few more for numbering! : )

I also liked these cute faux greenery plants. I was surprised they really didn't look cheap. There were a couple other varieties that I thought looked borderline tacky, but I liked these the best anyway because of the silvery/white sheen on the leaves. Not too fake-plant-green.

I also loved the simplicity of the white placemat with blue striping. It's not sewn totally straight, which would probably bug some people, but I'm not all about perfection here. Plus, once it has some fun accessories on top, who would notice? It makes a great layer on a side table under some wire cloches or candlesticks or whatever.

I think that's about the best $13 I've ever spent! Have you guys had any Dollar Tree luck?

Walking in Memphis

I'm baaaack! And I have missed you all so much! It's been a sad week with no blog posting and hearing from all my friends!

Well, Memphis was an absolute blast and I am now an expert wakeboarder. Ok, maybe not expert, but I did try it again for the first time since I was 13 and loved every second! I got fairly decent at it in the few times I got to go too.

Memphis didn't disappoint in the shopping department either. My awesome cousin Heather took us to a really amazing antiques mall and it was so fun to poke around! There were lots of fun treasures to be had, including some grain sacks, fabulous potted faux herbs, and the usual antiques mall fare.

This was my favorite booth. It was pretty much the only "whites" one, and was closest to my style. They had awesome stuff but I couldn't take it home because a) I am cheap and b) we were flying. Fun to look at though!

I also found this fun chandelier at another booth. It was a neat patina and I liked the wheat detailing, especially since I'm a Kansas girl. It was only $150 which I thought was very reasonable, but again the flight home was an obstacle : )

I also loved this great vignette. Lots of eye candy!

After the antiques mall we went to a part of Memphis (or suburb??) called Collierville. The original town square has been turned into a bunch of lovely boutiques and cafes.

Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of the most fabulous part of Collierville: a store called First Fruit. It. Was. A. Maz. Ing. Seriously, if you're ever even anywhere near Memphis, you have to go check out this store! It was like a decorator's heaven.

Here's what I managed to cart back on the plane from Tennessee...

The gray cake stand/wire cloche combo and faux greenery pot are from First Fruit. The vintage seltzer bottle is from the antiques mall.

Here's where I need some help, though. Does anyone know how to get the disgusting "antique water" out of my antique seltzer bottle?? I thought you could just unscrew the top, pour it out and clean it, but apparently things weren't made like that back in the day. I've seen clean and sparkling seltzer bottles before, so I know it can be done. I just don't know how! Any advice??

Well that's all from my trip! Now what have you all been up to? I'm just dying to hear from you!

Away We Go!

Well, we're off! Ready to take Memphis by storm! My family and I fly out tomorrow afternoon for several days with my dad's side of the family which will include boat/lake time, board games, shopping, eating, laughing, about 75 kids under the age of 8, and some flea marketing (you better believe I timed our trip just right with the gigantic Memphis Flea Market this weekend ; ). It's sure to be a good time! My family is sooo fun and a blast to hang out with!

Of course a trip like this requires some serious packing, which is what I spent all of tonight doing. (Ok maybe the majority of tonight was actually spent stalking perusing my new fave blog Life in the Fun Lane, with a little packing thrown in.)

- 2 pairs of jeans - 7 cute shirts - 4 t-shirts - 2 swim suits - 1 cover-up - 4 pairs of shoes - 3 pairs of shorts - 2 sets of pajamas - 3 camisoles - 4 pairs of earrings - 2 bracelets - makeup, shower supplies, blow dryer, straightner coming soon

I sure managed to fill this thing up! And also discovered that pretty much everything I own (or at least prefer to wear) is either a shade of cream or purple. Huh.

Really I'm just dying to get on the plane so I can treat myself to these babies...

Yep, I splurged on some really high quality reading material for the plane and boat. I cannot wait! I hope none of my family thinks they're going to actually talk to me during the flight, because I will certainly be grooving to Feist while gobbling up some decor goodness. Sorry, fam : ) : )

So after tonight I probably won't be around much til I return, but you better believe I will have some Memphis goodies to share with you (well, if I can smash them into my suitcase/smuggle them onto the plane ... do you think anyone would notice a vintage apothecary jar sticking out of my shirt??)

Hopefully, if all goes well and I get my act in gear, I will have a post on the 16th, because Marty over at A Stroll Thru Life is having a Summer Cloche Party. And if you know me, you know I love a cloche! Get your head out of the gutter, it's not as dirty as it sounds! I did some research and cloche is pronounced claw-sh. (Sorry, Meg, not as fun anymore, I know...)

Well, I'm off to get some beauty sleep before working a half day tomorrow, and then off to Memphis! Talk to you girls next week!

Topiary Hunting

Ok peeps, I need your help! I have been eying all these gorgeous, funky topiaries for a while now. I love how they're so organic and rustic looking. I love the ones that aren't quite straight and just have the funny little ball on top, planted in a crusty old pot.

But where on earth do you find things like this? The internet? Specialty plant shops? Only in way bigger and way cooler cities than Wichita, Kansas?? Or do they just come with all the cottages and farmhouses that always seem to have them?

I'm beginning to think all those homes in Country Living have real estate listings that read like this:

"A beautiful country farmhouse built in the late 1800s. This property features original hardwood floors, an updated kitchen with farmhouse sink and large island, a stone fireplace, and an elusive 2.5 foot topiary with one funky ball on top."

Yep, I'm pretty sure that's where topiaries must live, because they sure don't live at Lowe's or Home Depot with the rest of the me, I've checked.

So I need your help! Does anyone know where you find one of these things? Do you have one? Would you like to share pictures just so I can drool over it? Any help in this department would be much appreciated!

And while you're sleuthing, I've also been in search of the following:

1. Zinc (???) cake stand (I've seen tons of pictures of these out there in blogland but haven't a clue where to find one.)

2. Wire potting tote (again, lots of pictures, but apparently not carried at Hobby Lobby or TJ Maxx, which means I'm out of luck!)

P.S. I guess I shouldn't complain about my lack of topiaries, because my amazing mama bought me this faux (lavender??) one for Easter and I LOVE IT!! But I'm just so curious about where you get the real deal I can't stand it!

{all pictures except the last (terribly dark, fuzzy, sad-looking...I swear it's cute in person) one are from Country Living}

I love the color gray. To me it is so peaceful, relaxing, sophisticated and perfectly lovely. When I have my own place, I'd love to paint a room or two soft dove gray, and maybe even a charcoal gray. Right now I have to stick with gray accessories, but they are so much fun to collect.

Of course while I'm waiting for a gray room, I'll need some inspiration to enjoy...

Wishing you a very *gray* day, in the best way!
